Why insulation alone isn't enough

The core rule
- 1/150 rule (default): 1 sq ft of NFA for every 150 sq ft of attic floor area. This is the baseline required by IRC R806.2 unless specific conditions are met.
- 1/300 rule (reduced requirement): Allowed when a Class I or II vapor retarder is installed on the ceiling AND 40-50% of the ventilation area sits in the upper portion of the attic (near the ridge) — essentially, a properly balanced ridge-and-soffit system.
- 50/50 split: Whichever rule applies, split the total NFA evenly between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge) vents.

Step-by-step

What if you just install a big ridge vent and call it done? Without matching intake at the soffits, a ridge vent can't actually pull air through the attic — it just sits there. Intake should always be equal to or greater than exhaust; more exhaust than intake creates negative pressure that can pull conditioned air out of your living space instead of venting the attic.
